Have you seen the Senators-Sabres fight from last night? Ray Emery is crazy. I wouldn’t want to be an opposing goalie when he is in net. Checkout the fight and notice the grin on Emery’s face. Mind you, this was Emery’s first game back from a suspension…for hitting a player in the face with his goal stick. Crazy.

In 458 BC a Greek playwright was killed when an eagle, mistaking his bald head for a stone, dropped a live tortoise on him. Does this mean Britney Spears and I should be wary of turtle-wielding birds of prey? How do you defend against that? I hear Britney has taken up carrying an umbrella. They’re handy for assaulting paparazzi and fending off dive-bombing turtles.
It’s a balmy 22 degrees in Warren, Michigan today. It’s 69 degrees and they’re practicing on the baseball diamonds in Lakeland, Florida. Guess where I would rather be.
Why bother ranking college basketball teams when there’s a tournament to determine #1? Only 25 teams are ranked, but 65 (if you count the play-in game) make the tourney. Whether you’re team is ranked #1 or #25, you’ve got a ticket to March Madness. Wouldn’t it be more telling to have a system that ranks teams on the bubble? Just one more reason why votes, polls and rankings are nonsensical in sports; let the play decided the champion and leave the voting for politics.
It’s 53 degrees and cloudy in Surprise, Arizona. Though the weather isn’t good today, I’ll still take 53 degrees and Cactus League baseball over 22 degrees and pining for baseball.
Tiger Woods is looking to win his eighth consecutive PGA event. Is he bored by the fact there’s nobody even remotely as good as him? Lefty? C’mon. It’s unfair to Mickelson to even compare the two.
The 79th Academy Awards are this Sunday. What are the chances the wife will let me watch anything else? How many hours of pre-award show will I have to endure. I don’t watch pre-game for the Super Bowl (you know, an actual competition), why would I watch it for an overblown popularity contest?
(I got to hold an Oscar (2002 Original Song) once. They’re heavy. Surprisingly heavy.)
NASCAR had a close finish at Daytona last week. Now what can the average sports fan recall about the race; the incredibly close finish or the crash between Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch with 47 laps to go?
(Or you could be like me and know nothing about the race and have to look up those two tidbits just so I could crack something cynical about NASCAR.)
The U.S. soccer team beat Mexico 2-0 in a “friendly†back on February 8th. A pair of questions buzzed around my head. First, the U.S. beat someone that actually cares about soccer? Secondly, what the heck is a “friendly What an epic win it must have been as it’s been two weeks and this is the first I’ve heard of it. Go USA Soccer.
Former NBA player Dennis Johnson died yesterday. He played for the Sonics and tormented my hometown Pistons while with the Celtics. Johnson was one of those opposing players every fan of the game had to respect and opponents feared. More of today’s players should emulate his style of play.
The NFL is holding its combine this week. It’s ludicrous to think players will make or lose millions of dollars based upon the Wonderlic test and hundredths of a second running the 40. (***snore***) Wake me when they suit up and start hitting.
Men and women will win the same prize money at Wimbledon this year. Though the story is being spun as women finally getting the same credit as their male counterparts, the reality is women should be making more money. Think of all the best matches fans have witnessed in the past ten years. Nearly all of them are on the women’s side. Why? Because technology has pushed the sport (and specifically, serving) to such an absurd extreme that the volley only exists on the women’s side. The men’s game has been reduced to the power serve and it gets boring rather quickly. Women’s tennis is the one sport I believe is superior to the men’s game in every way.
Of course, the short skirts could have a lot to do with it too.
